ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN SOME TAMIL COMMUNITIES

Peta India.com published had this alert recently:

TELL TAMIL NADU TO STOP ANIMAL SACRIFICES ONCE AND FOR ALL

`Last year, Chief Minister Jayalalitha announced a landmark victory on behalf of animals by reinforcing existing legislation against animal sacrifice in Tamil Nadu. However to the consternation of animal activists across India, the ban has now been revoked by the government, speculatively because of the forthcoming general elections.´?

In South Africa , according to recent  letters to the editors of daily newspapers, there is after decades of absence, a resurge in animal sacrifices as a part of religious ceremonies. A popular Durban (an east coast port) temple that promoted such a practice decades ago is once again providing facilities to some devotees for such barbaric rituals. Whilst this is not widespread, there is cause for concern.

Fortunately in South Africa,  the Saivites, devotees of Sai Baba and other saints and most temples do not subscribe to this practice.

There is an urgent need for religious leaders to address the issue of sacrifice and the symbolic reference to the practice.

AN IN-DEPTH REVIEW OF SACRIFICE IS CURRENTLY BEING RESEARCHED FOR PUBLICATION IN THS PAGE: EDITOR
